DUMBO                                                           Pictures & Video     Police Precinct #

How to get there:  Take the A, C subway to High Street or the F subway to York Street.  Get off at High Street.  The York Street route takes you to the outskirts of DUMBO, near Brooklyn Heights.  The High Street route takes you to the area under the Brooklyn Bridge to the main part of DUMBO.
Opinion:  Parts of it were nice.  The historic area was ok.  I'd give it a 3.  Would I live there?  Only if I had to.  I really liked being near the river and under the Brooklyn Bridge is really beautiful.  Everyone should visit at least once.  There were many young professionals and mothers walking around, but the area was also sprinkled with the occasional pair of those wandering with nothing to do ... just hanging out.  I don't like to see people just hanging out on street corners.

There were a lot of factory buildings and as you walked further from the historic downtown DUMBO area which is nearer to the Brooklyn Bridge, some areas were really broken down and not kept well.  The odd thing is that there were areas in between the broken down areas that were impeccably well kept.

There is definitely a wide variety of incomes that live in DUMBO.  I saw broken down junks for cars as well as shiny new BMWs and Mercedes.  Also, DUMBO is a bit artsy.

Is DUMBO safe?  I felt it was pretty safe during the day, depending.  At night?  I would not feel safe there at night.  I would be doing the walk quickly, trust no one, look around every corner routine.  The picture on the left is pretty representative.
There wasn't really anyone walking around, except on the main street.  It was desolate with maybe five or six people on the street at one time.  Lots of people, nannies, families, tourists, men hanging out at the parks near and under the bridge.  Away from the parks, which are near the water, it was fairly desolate.  I don't feel safe in desolate areas and did feel a twinge of wariness a few times during our visit.

As we were walking, I joked with my daughter that I felt as if I was in one of those horror movies where the townspeople are all happy and thriving during the day, but when the sun set, they locked their doors, closed their windows and shut the lights off.  Be sure this is an exaggeration, but my impression does make you wonder.  I will visit again and perhaps my second impression will be entirely different.

I do think that this area will be cleaned up in five years or so.  I see a lot of progress in the area as far as repairing the old and constructing a nicer area.  It simply is "in progress" and has not yet arrived.  This will be a great area someday.

If I had no other option, I would say this is an o.k. place to live, but take caution.
