East Village                                               Pictures & Video     Police Precinct #9 - The Fighting 9th
Location:  14th Street to Houston Street on the east side.
East 10th Street, on the east by Avenue B, on the south by East 7th street and on the west by Avenue A.

Mom's Opinion?:  2009:  I walked all the way down 2nd Avenue today.  I have renamed it Graffiti Avenue since I saw a great deal of graffiti all the way down.  The farther down I got, the more I saw.  The East Village is perfect for those who love the irreverent.  Younger, hip crowd (such as punkers, rockers and the like) will love this area.  You must feel comfortable with the tattoo crowd, which I am.  However, I prefer to live elsewhere.  Not for the June Clever, Leave it to Beaver types, for sure.  Young professionals who prefer order and are obsessed with neatness will not care for the East Village.  It has a very special brand of person living there.  I would not feel safe there at night and the farther downtown I traveled, the more I felt that the night hours would be very dangerous.  There are a lot of people just hanging out on the streets (nothing to do, nowhere to go).  I had moments of concern during the day, but I really felt very comfortable walking there overall.

2008: I have only been at the very top of the East Village so far.... right above Gramercy near Suyvescent on First Street.  It was diverse area with many, many different American and foreign people.  You see that all over NYC, but more so here.  Here I see diverse social groups too ranging from punkers to bohemian.  Lots more graffiti on the buildings here.  I felt safe, but it is more bustling and fast paced.  I plan on visiting the East Village later on this summer.  The East Village is known to attract the young and trendy, cutting-edge crowd.  All the bars that partiers visit are located in the East Village, so if you're moving here, you may eventually visit if you're the type to go out will coworkers or friends.

Is the East Village Safe?
Safety Verdict as of 2008:  Yes it is safe during the day, others say they feel safe in the evenings too (common sense applied).  The overall consensus is to stay away from Tompkins Park at night.  Still others have warned about Allen Street and Christie street below Houston Street being a bit sketchy.  2009:   I definitely agree on the Christie Street warning after walking down there.  If you "belong" then you may not have to watch out as much.  But for those who clearly look like tourists or people who don't belong, I'd be very cautious.   Walking all the way down Christie Street brings you to the beginning of one end of Chinatown on Canal Street.

Please remember that crime can happen anywhere.  2008 Article - Karaoke bouncer shot during melee
Cheaper Groceries MET grocery store is located in the East Village closer to the 21st street area.  Great affordable prices on groceries at this store.
