Opinion?:  I recently moved to W 86th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus and I like it very much. August 2009

2008:  I love the lower part of the Upper West Side - Probably below 87th Street.  This is NOT a bargain rental area.  We rode the subway up to 110th street and walked around.  Besides the abundance of cat calls from moving vehicles and out windows, everyone was basically respectful, but we did not belong there.  If I had to, I'd reluctantly let my daughter stay in the area if there was absolutely no other option.  However, I would be calling her ten times a day to make sure she was ok.

We continued to walk around from Central Park toward Riverside Drive and down Broadway from 110th.  Technically, 110th street is the cut off of the Upper West Side. The lower the street numbers, the more comfortable I felt.  Note that many, more adventurous,
worldly types would have absolutely no problem with the area.  (Small town June Cleaver's need not apply). Also, note that my opinions are strictly from a "am I comfortable with my daughter living in this area in the daytime and the nighttime and in an emergency situation" which may come about because of brown out, terrorism, etc. mom that freaks out too much point of view.)

However, if one were to be more selective, the areas below 87th street would be the choice and a VERY nice choice (of course with some exceptions).  The closer to Central Park side, the better.  However, you get what you pay for.  On the Upper West Side you will be paying a minimum of $2,000 for a one room sublet, sharing with one or more roommates and that $2,000 a month is a steal.  Then add utilities.  The higher you go in street number, the lower you'll go in rent (and yes you can find some really expensive, gorgeous places in the higher street numbers also, if you like the area).  Although keep in mind that you can find an absolutely gorgeous living space anywhere in the city .... no matter what the crime rate and social structure of the area.  New York is filled with gorgeous places, although most of them are small.  One forum poster (year 2003) found a one bedroom for $2100 that was very nice.

Central Park is very nice.  I would not walk there in darkness and I have seen some groups that frequent the park that cause me to move to another location, but for the most part, I feel very unthreatened and safe there.  I would use common sense as one would do in any part of the city.  I love this area too and it is one of my favorite places in New York as well.  Lots of women walking babies in carriages, lots of dog walkers and kids.  Always tons of tourists.  There are private schools in the area as well.  Many gorgeous brownstones in the lower numbers.  Some attainable for rental and some NEVER ATTAINABLE IN THIS LIFE TIME!
