Gramercy Park (grammercy)                                   Pictures & Video     Police Precinct #13

Gramercy Park is located Between 18th and 23rd to the east of Park Avenue

Mom's Opinion?:  The one block that is the actual "park" that is named Gramercy Park is absolutely gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous .... but forget about it.  You can't even walk into the park unless you have a key which is only available to residents.  The buildings are spectacular.  But that area is just one small block of what is known as Gramercy Park.  The next block up in one direction is a police station, the police training academy and the hospital.  It is a bustling area.

The closer you go to First Street, the more congested and bustling the atmosphere seems.  I liked the area from about Third street to Broadway.  I did not feel unsafe, but would choose something else for our purposes.  I will add that there are some really nice apartment possibilities in the area that I don't prefer.  So, don't discount it.  Some of the forums have said the area near 3rd avenue is a bit sketchy at night, but its not the worst area you could end up in.  Of course, then someone else countered with an opposite opinion saying it was very safe.

When I was there, however, I felt that it had the potential for it to be a bit sketchy at night, so I'll go with the first person's opinion and my own gut feeling.  However, the person who though it was very safe may have been talking about the area right around "Gramercy Park"... the gated park.  In that area, I felt VERY safe and did not feel as if it would be sketchy at night.  I only felt that way when I started to move toward 3rd, 2nd and 1st Streets.
Brownstones
This area has one of New York's highest concentrations of landmark-protected buildings.  The streets that branch off of the central park area have brownstones and are very hard to come by and very expensive.
