Harlem                                            Pictures & Video     Police Precinct # 23 (East Harlem) & the 28th

Mom's Opinion?  Have not visited yet. However, New Yorkers tell me that the area has cleaned up considerably.   Note that former president Bill Clinton has an office in Harlem which has helped to give Harlem a message of revitalization.  However, it would not be my first choice, partly because I feel it is too far up the island and I like the lower half better.

Posters who live in NYC do not recommend moving to Harlem if you have never lived in Manhattan before.  The overall advice is that moving to Harlem is for more for experienced New Yorkers.  The general advice I hear is not to look above 100th street if you're a first time renter in New York.

April 15, 2009.  I drove through Harlem and it was neat and seemed clean and a good place to live in the daylight.  On 110th street at the top of Central Park, people (young women and men of all colors) were freely jogging in the park with no worries.  I did speak with a student at Columbia University a few weeks ago who lives in Morningside Heights (in Harlem) and she said she never has any problems but probably would not venture out at night.  From my drive through Harlem, I agree.
