Mom's Opinion?: November 2008: Visited Hell's Kitchen this past weekend.  It wasn't bad, but it would not be my first choice to have my daughter live there.  I felt safe enough, but also felt an undercurrent of unease compared to the other areas of Manhattan.  One of the things I loved there was Restaurant Row.  It is definitely worth visiting.  The restaurants line the street and are very picturesque and exquisite.  Well worth a trip.  The other place that is worth the visit is the Salvation Army.  On the fourth floor you can find some incredibly beautiful furniture for a low price.  Of course, you will have to search the warehouse floor, but you can find some very high end furniture that is very clean and a lot less than you'll pay at any other furniture store.

June 2008: Have not visited here yet, but native New Yorker's tell me it has been cleaned up a lot.  The area has a "gritty reputation" and I understand that housing prices tend to be cheaper in this area.
