Astoria, New York                                       Pictures & Video     Police Precinct #

I have visited parts of Astoria.  I did not feel 100% comfortable there.  The subway is very deserted, even in the daylight.  Lots of graffiti.  The men seemed a little too comfortable with approaching my daughter on the street.  I did not find this in other places we have looked.  What I liked was the cheapness of the apartments and the absolutely awesome and inexpensive fruit stands.  However, the apartment buildings that we looked at were not very well kept and were broken down.

Many people on the forums recommend Astoria.  One person quoted a 2002 price of $1200 per month for a large one bedroom.  It is said to have lots of Greek/Italian immigrants, but I also saw "many" other groups as well.  Someone who lives in NYC noted that Astoria was a very dirty place.  I have to agree.   That's how I felt when visiting.  I have just read another forum where a poster notes the dirty aesthetics of Astoria.  I guess it depends on what you're comfortable with.

I recently expressed my displeasure with the area I visited in Astoria to my neighbor's son, who has lived in NYC for 10 years now.  He told me that I, most likely, would prefer the part of Astoria nearer to Long Island City.  So, I will visit there and see what I think.  Specifically, Astoria Park has been recommended by posters.

One poster who used to live in Astoria described Astoria as an "off-the-boat" neighborhood with Greeks, Turks, Arabs, French, Germans, Mid-Westerners and more and also noted that is was a very safe neighborhood.

Another thing people like about Astoria is that all the trains go directly to Times Square.
